1979 – A estreia
Com 170 concorrentes e 10 mil quilómetros pela frente através a Argélia, Nigéria, Mali, Burkina Faso e Senegal, Cyril Neveu inscreve o seu nome como primeiro vencedor, enquanto o primeiro carro termina, à geral… em quarto! Um sucesso e os resultados ficam para segundo plano. Já presente, Hubert Auriol, director do Dakar entre 1994 e 2003.

1980 – Os camiões surgem
A grande novidade é uma classificação específica para camiões, mas no Prólogo os 15 primeiros lugares são ocupados por motos! Os inscritos aumentam (são agora 216) e Neveu volta a vencer nas duas rodas, enquanto Kotulinsky se impõe nos automóveis e Ataquat faz o mesmo nos camiões.

Com Metge a obter uma segunda vitória nos carros, Ickx convence a Porsche a participar e a marca alemã estreia-se com um sexto posto. E lembram-se de Montgorgé? Depois do Rolls, aposta num proto de 6 rodas. Mesmo resultado… Última participação para a dupla Megre (42º)/Cortez (34º).

Hiroshi Masuoka consegue a primeira vitória no Dakar, com Meoni a repetir o primeiro lugar do ano anterior. Depois de no ano passado ter estado perto de vencer, Sousa repete igualmente a posição, voltando a terminar a prova no quinto posto.

2010 – A primeira de Carlos Sainz
Carlos Sainz venceu finalmente o Dakar, mas com grande réplica por parte de Nasser Al-Attiyah, não roubando a glória ao espanhol por pouco e depois de muito “bate boca” pelo meio. Entre a comitiva nacional, Carlos Sousa foi sexto e Helder Rodrigues quarto nas duas rodas. A VW reservou o pódio, depois da BMW ter estragado tudo logo de início. Salvou-se o inevitável Peterhansel, mesmo assim com muitos problemas pelo meio.
