As 200 mensagens de felicitações pelo segundo título de Produção que Armindo Araújo recebeu são um bom reflexo da popularidade que o piloto atingiu no ano em que faz precisamente 10 anos de carreira. Mas são antes de mais um reconhecimento do seu trabalho e profissionalismo que, na última temporada foi levado ao limite.
Como o próprio explica, “o projeto deste ano foi diferente de tudo o que tinha experimentado até aqui. Fui responsável pelo desenvolvimento do Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X. Fiz milhares de quilómetros de testes e isso permitiu-me preparar muito bem os ralis, ganhar muito ritmo e ter um conhecimento técnico e mecânico do carro como nunca tinha acontecido. E, nesse contexto, o título aconteceu naturalmente pois terminamos todas as provas no pódio e ainda ganhamos três delas, o que demonstra bem o potencial da equipa Ralliart Itália. Na prática foi como ser piloto de fábrica só que com um Grupo N e não com um WRC”.
É também por isso que, depois de experimentar esse grau de profissionalismo, Armindo Araújo tem dificuldade em projetar o seu futuro baseado numa filosofia diferente: “qualquer que seja o meu projeto do próximo ano terá que passar sempre por estes moldes pois é a única maneira de termos garantias que vamos lutar por um resultado interessante. Se passarmos para uma equipa em que recebemos uma fatura de pagamento ao quilómetro não nos vais ajudar a evoluir”.
Por aqui se percebe porque é que o futuro poderá passar pela manutenção na equipa Ralliart Itália, pois como dá conta o bicampeão “estou a dar prioridade à minha equipa em termos de projeto pois ela oferece-me as condições ideais para evoluir. Prefiro correr no PWRC como corri este ano do que correr no WRC numa equipa onde seja apenas piloto pagante. Um WRC sem condições para evoluir não me interessa. Com o ‘know how’ que a Ralliart Itália ganhou este ano ela pode dedicar-se a outros projetos que não os do PWRC, se o quiser”. Será esta uma mensagem criptada para a integração da estrutura italiana na nova categoria dos WRC? Daqui a algum tempo dissipar-se-ão as dúvidas…

“Só corremos onde podemos”
Mas enquanto o futuro não avança, vale a pena perceber como foi possível a Armindo Araújo tornar-se o único piloto do mundo que se pode gabar de ter conquistado dois títulos consecutivos no PWRC. “A grande dificuldade este ano foi saber que, pelo sistema de pontuação, qualquer desistência podia hipotecar o título. Isso obrigou-nos a encontrar o equilíbrio perfeito entre um carro rápido e muito fiável. Por outro lado, em 2010, havia muitos menos pilotos na corrida para o título que em 2009, o que, à partida, parece melhor, mas significa que se tivéssemos alguma falha, os resultados dos nossos adversários seriam menos divididos ou seja, haveria menos pilotos a repartirem os nossos pontos, logo cada um deles ficaria com mais em caso de uma desistência”, refere Armindo com a satisfação do dever cumprido. Mas para muitos este segundo título no PWRC não tem o mesmo valor que teria o primeiro no SWRC. A esses, Armindo responde: “infelizmente, não corremos onde queremos, mas onde podemos. As pessoas não imaginam as dificuldades por que se passam para montar um projeto de PWRC que está já muito acima da realidade portuguesa”. É também por ter essa consciência e os pés sempre bem assentes na terra que Armindo Araújo chegou onde chegou …
Desenvolver o futuro Lancer R4
Sem ter definido ainda qual será o seu futuro, a verdade é que Armindo Araújo continua a ser piloto da Ralliart Itália e por isso é o piloto que desenvolve os Mitsubishi de ralis. A prova está na estreia no Rali de Monza do novo Lancer R4 que tem já as últimas especificações que a FIA quer introduzir no novo agrupamento R4. Este novo carro apresenta já inúmeras diferenças face ao Evo X de Produção: para além duma cura de emagrecimento de 100 quilos, apresenta também um diferente tipo de ancoragem de suspensão, materiais do tablier alterados, instalação elétrica de competição e, portas, guarda-lamas e vidros em fibra, sendo que, em 2012, existe a possibilidade de utilização de uma caixa sequencial.

De piloto a mecânico
Quando se chega ao Mundial de Ralis o nível de exigência sobe em flecha e não é apenas no que concerne à capacidade de pilotagem. Dada a dureza dos ralis e profissionalismo das equipas, muitas vezes os pilotos são obrigados a tornarem-se autênticos mecânicos de ocasião, sendo obrigados a ter um profundo conhecimento do carro que guiam ao nível técnico. Segundo Armindo, “passo alguns dias por ano a ter cursos de mecânica dentro da equipa. Informação que apreendemos que vai desde eletrónica até à aprendizagem de mudança de transmissões, braços de suspensão, rodas, travões, etc. Tudo isto é facilitado com fotografias inseridas em grelhas que são numeradas para mais facilmente identificarmos os órgãos mecânicos e transmitirmos com maior rapidez e exatidão aos mecânicos que, por telefone, nos ajudam muitas vezes a resolver os problemas”.
TT sim, GT’s talvez um dia!
Embora totalmente concentrado nos ralis e na sua carreira no Mundial de Ralis, Armindo Araújo não esconde o gosto pelas provas de TT, admitindo, no futuro, fazer provas com veículos Todo-o-Terreno: “gostava de voltar ao TT onde só tive algumas participações esporádicas porque gosto da aventura e de rodar no desconhecido. Já no tempo das motos preferia o desconhecido do enduro ao motocrosse sempre no mesmo circuito. É por isso também que circuitos não fazem muito o meu género, mas noutra fase da minha carreira talvez sejam uma opção interessante, por exemplo os GT’s. Mesmo depois de ter gostado de guiar um fórmula, este ano na Corrida dos Campeões, é muito improvável que volte a fazê-lo em condições normais
O Loeb de Santo Tirso!
A alcunha não é nova, mas parece encaixar como uma luva em Armindo Araújo, para muitos ‘O Loeb de Santo Tirso’. E, ressalvando algumas diferenças importantes, é curioso que até o próprio piloto português reconheça algumas semelhanças entre aquele que é para muitos o melhor piloto de ralis de todos os tempos e aquele que, para muitos, é também o melhor piloto português de ralis de sempre: “na verdade, o nosso percurso de competição é muito parecido na fase inicial. Ambos começamos por ganhar troféus. Depois ambos fomos pilotos da Citroën nos países de origem, mas depois ele passa para o Mundial mais cedo com a Citroën e eu fiquei a ganhar campeonatos nacionais em Portugal, entrando só mais tarde no Mundial de Ralis”.
Aí talvez tenha sido a dimensão do país tenha feito toda a diferença, pelas oportunidades que criou. Analisando a performance do heptacampeão, Armindo refere que “é um excelente piloto, mas teve tudo a seu favor. Juntou-se provavelmente o melhor piloto de todos os tempos com uma das melhores equipas de todos os tempos”.
Pé esquerdo só no Mundial!
A técnica da travagem com o pé esquerdo, utilizada pela maior parte dos pilotos em ralis, só começou a ser usada por Armindo Araújo muito tardiamente na sua carreira. Na verdade, “só senti falta dela quando cheguei ao Mundial, pois em Portugal conhecemos tão bem todos os troços que não temos hesitações. Já nas provas do Mundial, como a morfologia, a dimensão e o ritmo das especiais é diferente não conseguimos ter o mesmo grau de certeza e conhecimento de cada centímetro da estrada. Isso faz com que tenhamos tendência para usar o pé esquerdo a travar para tirarmos maior partido das rotações do motor e para termos mais controlo sobre o carro. Quando cheguei ao Mundial, percebi logo que tinha que aprender a usar essa técnica, senão nunca teria um ritmo igual ao dos outros pilotos”.
