Oito carros abandonaram na sequência um violento acidente na primeira curva do GP da Austrália F1 2002, com Rubens Barrichello e Ralf Schumacher a estarem no centro da ação, enquanto Fisichella, Massa, Heidfeld, Button, Panis e McNish também acabaram por desistir logo ali.
Mas outros pilotos foram, igualmente afetados, com Raikkonen e Salo a terem de passar pelas boxes para repararem os seus carros, danificados naquele incidente.

Barrichello efetuou um bom arranque, mas o mesmo não se passou com M. Schumacher, que foi passado pelo seu irmão Ralf. O alemão da Williams tentou passar Barrichello pela direita, mas foi tapado, foi para a esquerda, mas o brasileiro voltou a mudar de trajetória, iniciando de imediato a travagem para a primeira curva.
Surpreendido, Ralf Schumacher não conseguiu evitar bater em pleno na traseira do Ferrari, sobrevoando o carro vermelho, para sair de pista a alta velocidade, o mesmo se passando com Barrichello.
Atrás, com peças dos dois carros espalhados pela pista, foi o caos. Raikkonen sentiu uma peça alojar-se sob o seu McLaren e teve de seguir em frente, obrigando Michael Schumacher a ir para a relva para o evitar.
Depois foi Heidfeld a iniciar o resto da carambola ao tocar em Fisichella, que empurrou Button, Panis e Massa para fora de pista, levando todos ao abandono.
E Panis acabou por tocar em McNish, forçando-o a ir para a relva, mas sem ter danos no seu Toyota. O pior foi que quando o escocês regressou ao asfalto foi apanhado em cheio por Button, que tentava regressar às boxes, condenando-o a ser o oitavo piloto a abandonar ainda antes de percorrer um quilómetro sequer. Num ápice mais de um terço do plantel ficou de fora, tirando grande parte do interesse à corrida.
